Low-cost 3D technology for everyone

A research group at Auckland University has developed a low-cost, real-time 3D vision that could be applied in a variety of different ways, for example map-making, biometric security, augmented reality and forensics as well as effects in games and films.

L’Oreal and Grazia magazine have launched an augmented reality (AR) ad campaign starring North East’s sweetheart Cheryl Cole (or is it Tweedy again?).

Promoting L’Oreal’s Glam Shine Reflexion lip gloss, the campaign is said to have been designed to introduce “an original and memorable cross-platform push”.

The Sun goes 3D

thesun_cover1The Sun newspaper plans to publish a 3D edition in June, a week before the FIFA World Cup kicks off, BrandRepublic reports.

The edition, which will be out on 5 June, will feature 3D versions of the editorial, colour ads and the famous Page 3. Also, the World Cup Fixtures Wall Chart will be in 3D.

The move will make Sun the first national newspaper to run content in 3D.

3D hype gathers momentum with gaming and TV channel plans

1554 Monica MulkensThe gaming giant Nintendo announced earlier this week plans to release a hand-held gaming device that will provide 3D images without the need for glasses.

The new device, dubbed ‘Nintendo 3DS’, hasn’t been given an exact release date but the excited gamers will get a sneak peak in June at the annual video games show in Los Angeles.

The 3D hype is set to take off this year with full speed. Following the huge success of films, such as Avatar and Alice in the Wonderland in cinemas, the technology is now ready to be introduced on TV screens.

3D ads to North East shop windows

A Tyneside firm has been appointed as Northern channel partner to bring UK’s first ‘glasses free’ 3D system to the region, the bDaily reports.

The Luminis system delivers 3D images to the naked eye using ‘lenticular’ screen technology. Transparent, cylindrical lenses will project light in acute angles to generate different images to each eye. Up until now, 3D has required two eyes seeing two different images.

Software enables porn-viewer to join in – virtually

Using Adobe Flash Pink’s “augmented reality”, the software superimposes animated characters into consumers’ rooms which are captured by web cameras and eventually people will themselves be able to join the action.

Sony makes 3D priority in 2010 strategy

3d_glassesSony has unveiled plans to rapidly boost its 3D product range over the next year, launching TV, Blu-ray and gaming products with the technology.

The entertainment company said it would launch 3D-related products for the home, including TV, Blu-ray Disc players/recorders and 3D gaming on PlayStation3.

It has a target revenue from 3D-related products of more than one trillion yen by 2013.
