Digital sector has social responsibility to fulfil, says TDC speaker Atau Tanaka

atau_tanakaAccording to Atau Tanaka, Director of Newcastle University’s Culture Lab, what it means to be a creative media lab in today’s society is fundamentally different to what it meant 25 years ago.

Back in the mid 80s, when the MIT media lab was founded and researchers were just beginning to innovate with mobile technologies, ‘being digital’ was still a concept.

“Today, the society is digital – the future has arrived and that changes what’s at stake”, Atau said.

“It changes the social relevance and pertinence of a lab like ours to have more of a social function.”

Apprentice teams enter the app market

ampiappsThe digital world will never be same after the supremely annoying Apprentice teams created their very own apps.

(By ‘created’ we mean they came up with the brilliant ideas. The apps were made a reality by the leading development company Grapple.)

The winning app came from the girls team. AmpiApps featured a series of annoying sounds such as baby’s screams and animal shrieking. Of course they missed out on the most annoying sound of all – their own conversation.

Thinking Digital reveals full programme

'Lovers' Box' puts romance back in digital communications

lovers-box1A team at Newcastle University have created digital ‘Lovers’ Boxes’ to enable couples to record romantic messages for each other.

The boxes, which have been described as digital storybooks, draw on the aesthetics of traditional wooden jewellery boxes, but actually contain the latest technology.

A computer with an integrated RFID reader is hidden inside the box. Other than the screen itself, all visible trappings of digital technology are hidden from view.

Digital pilot gets North East football magazine off to great start

the_blizzardA new North East football magazine has generated a huge wave of interest across the globe in its first two weeks.

The Blizzard, a quarterly publication which takes its name from a Victorian-era Sunderland newspaper, provides a platform for a group of sports writers to publish longer and more considered pieces than possible in the mainstream papers.

The magazine launched in March with a digital ‘Issue Zero’, available for download on a pay-what-you-like basis.
