More than half of UK pensioners now on Facebook

The British have really jumped on board with social media with as many as 55% of over-65s now having a Facebook profile, a new study suggests.

The survey, issued by social media agency Umpf, showed how endemic social media use has become.

“Social media is clearly no longer the preserve of the tech-savvy under 30s”, Jon Priestley from Umpf said.

Consumers still confused about QR codes

QR_codes_confusingAccording to a new study, QR codes are still a long way off being little more than a marketing gimmick.

The online study, carried out by Simpson Carpenter, found that only 11% of consumers have used QR codes with lest than half (47%) finding them useful.

Kevin Connolly, from Simpson Carpenter, said one of the main reasons for the low adaptation is the lack of familiarity with new technology.

“Marketers would do well to focus on educating and informing consumers about their purpose rather than simply adding QR codes to their products and their advertising campaigns”, he said.

Scientific breakthrough could enable super-fast internet

Led by Nobel-winning scientists Andre Geim and Kostya Novoselov, the research team have found a way of using graphene to capture and convert more light for optical communications.

Graphene is a form of carbon and its thickness of only one atom makes it the thinnest material in the world – yet 100 times stronger than steel.

Sunderland selected to host top web conference

The free DDD North event will take place at the University of Sunderland on Saturday October 8, aiming to offer the best in technical education and networking opportunities for the local and national .NET community.

As is traditional with DDD events, the conference has a community-led agenda with sessions and speakers selected by the attendees themselves.

Current session proposals include: “ C# Coding Guidelines – Techie Panto”, “Enforcing code beauty”, “.Net on a diet”, “Mind Control Your Computer” and “Touch me, stretch me, squeeze me”.

IKEA and YouTube team up to create your dream bedroom

New photo-tagging tool means extra cash for publishers

New image-tagging technology will allow publishers to connect viewers with the contents of photographs, sending them to shopping portals or other information online.

Using Stipple‘s Pipeline, publishers tag items within their photos and give the user the opportunity to go on and buy a dress or a watch, for example, which is featured in the image.
