First Northern Film & Media funded iPad app launched

Pitch 'N' TossTitled ‘Pitch ‘N’ Toss, the first app funded through the regional screen agency Northern Film & Media’s fund for iPad developers, has been launched.

‘Pitch ‘N’ Toss’ invites players to throw coins against a wall in a modern re-creation of the popular gambling game originating in the 18th century. Players are taken through 40 levels of increasing difficulty that require a combination of skill, guile and puzzle solving.

Developed by Newcastle-based DarlingDash, Pitch ‘N’ Toss has already been labelled as “the most addictive game I’ve ever played” by Channel 4 newsman Nick Martin.

Angry Birds – How it all started

NMM had a chance to catch up with the developers of the most talked about mobile game at the moment. With millions of downloads around world, Angry Birds is the king of casual gaming. Niklas Hed, CTO of Rovio, told us about the early stages of the game and what it takes to create a global hit.

Everything started at a regular publishing board meeting where one of Rovio’s developers presented the team with one single image. Everyone loved it, and the Birds were given the green light.

The development of the game took around eight months as, initially, it was only one project among many for the company, Niklas told us. But as the project progressed, they started realising that there might be more to this game than was first thought.

Condé Nast leading the way with e-mag apps

The American publishing giant Condé Nast has been keen to explore the possibilities of e-mag apps with its top magazine brands.

The company has been banking on the notion that iPad’s ‘luxury’ feel will fit well with its high-end lifestyle products, such as Vanity Fair, Wired and GQ – but the start hasn’t been too impressive.

The relatively poor sales figures reported so far have convinced critics that tablets are no saviour of the publishing industry.

But we thought it might be worth having a look at them anyway. NMM tried technology magazine Wired on the iPad to join the debate.

From headaches to hay fever, tablets often provide a speedy return to good health. Now the publishing industry is hoping digital tablets may do the same for their falling sales.

iPad GUI PSDAbout 10 years ago marked the start of worrying times for newspapers. As the internet became commonplace, panicked journalists started to talk about apocalypse – there was no way the print publishing industry could compete with the fast, up-to-date and, most importantly, free content websites were giving out.

The websites are still blooming, and print readerships declining. But something has happened to soothe the worriers. The introduction of mobile devices with a high-quality display screen – smartphones and tablets – means that things might not be so bad after all.

Web usability guru not impressed by the iPad

ipad_usabilityiPad apps are inconsistent and have low feature discoverability, with frequent user errors due to accidental gestures, Danish usability guru Jacob Nielsen slams.

According to the Guardian’s technology blogger Jack Schofield, Nielsen, who has just published a 93-page report on iPad usability, was expecting more of the device.

Nielsen said: “There were really a lot of usability problems in this first-generation of iPad applications. It’s often quite difficult for people to discover what they have to do because the options are not very visible.”

If computers were cars, Apple’s iPad would be something very fancy, with ridiculous seats and a giant spoiler on the back.

There’s no denying that the iPad is a good-looking piece of kit, and it’s futuristic style of “all-screen, no keyboard” is going to define what computing will be in the future. Amazon’s Kindle device looks similar, but is more focused around reading (and buying) any book, anywhere. These two devices are a glimpse of what computers are going to look like from now on: small, flat, and pocketable.

Publishing giant prepares to go on the iPad

GQ_feb_2010Condé Nast is reported to be making iPad versions on some of its top titles.

According to a Brand Republic article, Apple’s newest gadget would feature digital versions of GQ, Wired, Vanity Fair, The New Yorker and Glamour magazines.

A test version of the technology magazine Wired is already been published but the first magazine to be available on the iPad will be men’s magazine GQ in April.

North East iPad fund to help creative industries

Funding is available from between £1,000 and £10,000 to help develop iPad ideas from “sketches to the finished product”.

The £40,000 fund aims to help creative businesses to learn more about the product that is expected to be a global hit.
