Talking Friends app generates 41m downloads

Publisher Outfit7 says this represents just nine million fewer than Angry Birds, in half the time.

Taking Friends’ paid downloads were six million units, with prices ranging from $0.99 to $2.99 each. The apps are out on iPhone, iPad and Android devices.

Colour-blind? There's an app for that

A security researcher Dan Kaminsky has created an augmented reality app ‘DanKam’ in his spare time to compensate for colour-blindness.

Available for the iPhone and Android, DanKam uses several unique and configurable filters to images and video to enhance the difference between colours, making them visible to the colour-blind.

New app translates text in real-time

Word Lens, a new iPhone application uses augmented reality to translate text from Spanish to English and vice versa.

Through an iPhone camera, the app displays a translated version of the text being shot. The original text is replaced by translated words sized to match the space of the original.

High street goes mobile

Amazon has launched a new iPad app, called Windowshop, which aims to create a high-street-like shopping experience on the web.

The free app shows a menu of shopping categories allowing users to browse the top-selling products of each.

Amazon’s effort at recreating a sense of in-shop browsing is something retailers have tried to capture since the early days of the mobile.
