The news today that Sony would no longer be making its cassette Walkman filled me with nostalgia. I still remember myself and my younger brother getting our first Walkmans for Christmas roughly 10 years ago. I think the only cassette I had to play on it then was ‘The Simpsons’ album.

The creation of the Walkman was a real innovation as it allowed the user to listen to their own collection of music wherever and whenever they chose to.

The Walkman was born in 1979, when the Sony chairman asked his designers to make an item which would help him pass the time when on business trips, and allow him to listen to his favourite operas. Since its release the product has sold over 200 million units.

Carphone Warehouse set to challenge Spotify

music_anywhere (1)Carphone Warehouse’s new music streaming service ‘Music Anywhere’ puts your song libraries in the cloud.

The new service allows users to access their entire collections whenever, wherever, regardless of the capacity of their MP3 player.

Using Catch Media’s Play Anywhere platform, the service scans users’ collections and matches it up with its own database. A digital copy of a track that can’t be found in the database is automatically created and added to the user’s online account.

Prince announces internet 'completely over'

princePop icon prince has turned his back on the internet by offering his latest album on CD format only in the UK.

The 52-year-old star stood by his anti-digital views in a rare interview with The Daily Mirror.

“The internet’s completely over. I don’t see why I should give my new music to iTunes or anyone else. They won’t pay me an advance for it and then they get angry when they can’t get it.

Google to take on music industry?

google_musicGoogle is planning to launch a music download store in 2010, The Wall Street Journal reports.

The search giant is expected to roll out a music download store, directly linked to its search engine later this year. The “interim step” would be followed by an online subscription service in 2011.

Advertisers buy into music streaming

spotify_websiteMusic streaming services are becoming increasingly attractive to advertisers as their audiences grow rapidly in size, New Media Age reports.

Ad-funded music streaming service We7 announced reaching a tipping point in March – for the first time monthly streaming costs were fully covered by ad revenue.

According to the CEO of We7 Steve Purdham, the service has grown from 10,000 users in 2008 to 3 million in only two years.

North East-based music site targets global success

sharemyplaylist1Sunderland entrepreneur, Kieron Donoghue’s Sharemyplaylists.com is set for global success after receiving a six figure investment from local investors.

Launched in March last year, the social media site has become a popular place for Spotify users to share playlists and talk about their favourite artists and bands.

The site currently has over 17,000 playlists which makes it the largest site of its kind. It’s working in co-operation with major record labels and features celebrity playlists from the likes of Robbie Williams, Alicia Keys, Will Young, The Gorillaz and Leona Lewis.

Digital Economy Bill ‘good for music industry’

magnifying_glass (1)The controversial Digital Economy Bill was passed by the House of Commons on Thursday.

The Bill, which gives authorities new powers to take action against users who download material illegally, has been accused of being rushed through the legislative process without enough critical debate.

According to BBC Newsbeat, opponents have slammed the Bill, calling it a “vague, scrambled together piece of bad legislation”.

But it’s not been condemned by everyone. UK Music boss Feargal Sharkey said in a BBC interview that the Bill will give the music industry some “breathing space”.
