Gillette has launched a Twitter campaign to find out if the public prefers bearded or clean-shaven men.

The campaign will see identical twins Dean and George Georgiandes – one shaven, one bearded – tackle challenges such as a pasta-eating competition and trying to get better service from shop assistants.

Google encourages companies to engage with social media

Speaking at the AdTech conference last week, Benjamin Faes hailed social media as a “power thing companies need to embrace”.

YouTube boss offers teenager a job after YouTube Instant stunt

Stanford University student Feross Aboukhadijeh made a bet with his roommate that he could build a real-time YouTube search in less than an hour.

It eventually took him three hours to finish, so the bet was lost, but the impressive stunt caught the eye of YouTube chief executive Chad Hurley on Twitter.

Twitter users best placed in job market

twitter_cv2Twitter users write better CVs and are more likely to be shortlisted for a job interview, a new survey reveals.

MyJobGroup.co.uk, UK’s largest network of regional job boards, analysed 500 CVs from UK-based jobseekers and found repetition abounds.

One-third (37%) used exactly the same opening phrase; while the three most popular first-line words are ‘experience’ (27.1%), ‘skills’ (23.2%) and, ironically, ‘individual’ (22.6%).

Networking made simple

gowalla2Brian Kelly, from UKOLN at University of Bath, is planning on using geo-location services to provide an easy way for people to meet and network in an event in July.

Taking place at the University of Sheffield, Institutional Web Management Workshop 2010 (IWMW) will have a strong online presence using various Web 2.0 tools to get the best features from each.

This year, geo-location services will add to an official event blog and a Twitter hashtag.

“The intention is to geo-locate the main venues as well as places for social activities on Gowalla”, Brian says.

"My boss sucks" – 40% criticise employers online

Almost 40 per cent of UK employees criticise their workplace on social media, with one in five admitting to lambasting their bosses, a recent survey reveled.

Nearly 60 per cent confessed they would change what they wrote on their social networking profile if they knew their employer was reading it – yet recent Facebook privacy settings changes mean many employers could already be checking up on staff.

The employee research – conducted for MyJobGroup.co.uk which operates the UK’s largest network of regional job boards – showed over half (55 per cent) of workers believed fellow staff should face disciplinary action for criticising their workplace on social networking sites.
